Key Workers

Macarthur Paediatric Occupational Therapists are uniquely positioned to serve as key workers under the NDIS Early Childhood supports because they are university qualified and specialise in helping children develop essential functional skills, such as self-care, play, and social interactions. At Macarthur Paediatric Occupational Therapy, our OTs use tailored interventions to address each child's specific needs, working towards the goal of enabling children to perform daily activities independently. By focusing on these areas, our OTs help children build the confidence and abilities they need to navigate their environments and engage with their peers, which directly supports their social participation. In many cases our Occupational Therapists are already functioning as a key workers for our clients even without the title.

One of the main responsibilities of a key worker that Macarthur Paediatric Occupational Therapy provides is to coordinate with other service providers, schools, and external supports. This collaborative approach ensures that all aspects of the child's development are being addressed in a cohesive and comprehensive manner. Here's how we assist:

  • Coordination with Other Providers: Our OTs regularly communicate with other healthcare providers, such as speech therapists, physiotherapists, and psychologists, to ensure that all aspects of the child's therapy are aligned and supportive of their overall development. This collaborative approach helps to create a unified strategy that maximises the child's progress.

  • Collaboration with Schools: Our OTs work closely with educators to integrate therapy goals into the school environment. We provide guidance on how to adapt classroom activities to meet the child's needs and offer strategies to support the child's learning and social interactions within the school setting. This helps to ensure that the child’s development is supported consistently across all environments.

  • Engagement with External Supports: We liaise with various external supports, such as community programs and recreational activities, to facilitate the child's participation in broader social contexts. This might involve helping to identify suitable programs, offering advice on how to adapt activities to the child's abilities, or coordinating with program leaders to ensure the child’s needs are met.

  • Parent Education and coaching: Our OTs play a vital role in parent education and coaching. They empower parents by providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to support their child’s development within everyday routines. This involves educating parents about their child’s specific needs, demonstrating strategies to enhance their child's functional abilities, and coaching them on how to integrate therapeutic activities into daily life.

Macarthur Paediatric Occupational Therapists are not only skilled in enhancing functional independence and social participation, but they also play a crucial role in coordinating and advocating care and supports across various settings. This makes them ideal key workers under the NDIS Early Childhood supports, ensuring that each child receives comprehensive, consistent, and effective support tailored to their unique needs.
